We would
like to take this time to introduce ourselves to you.
We are the
Firefighters
of Tampa Bay Pipes & Drums Inc.
Bagpiping
has been a part of the fire service since the Irish came to
America in large numbers and took jobs as firefighters when
they were not allowed to apply for other jobs. Since then
Bagpipers have been as much a part of the fire service as the
Dalmatian or the Maltese cross.
Here in the south this tradition has been sparse at best, yet
whenever there is a line of duty funeral what is the one thing
that is always there? A bagpiper showing the world how
firefighter’s say goodbye to one of their own. Usually, it’s a
civilian if one of the very few firefighter bagpipers in
Florida isn’t available. Firefighters of Tampa Bay Pipes &
Drums is here to change that. Like our band logo says, we are
truly “A band of brothers”. The
band is comprised of active, retired and volunteer
firefighters as well as their family members from the Tampa
Bay area. We are firefighters, lieutenants, captains and
chiefs and we are here to represent our departments and the
fire service in the most positive light we can. We are here
for fire service functions such as funerals, parades,
weddings, graduations, banquets or anywhere the fire service
is welcomed.
We want to have as many members
as possible from every fire department in West central Florida. We are also happy to say
that we have members from outside this area that proudly
represent their departments and community within our band. When our band passes by
people see the diversity of the fire service by
seeing as many participating department shoulder patches as we
have departments in the area. We do this in part by having
each member wear their department patch and badge on their
band uniform along with the band patch on the other sleeve.
We are
currently interested in finding firefighters and firefighter's
family members that would like
to become bagpipe or drumming students to help make this band
truly representative of the Tampa Bay area fire service and
its departments.
We have a
piping instructor and a drumming instructor available to teach
new students the craft. We’re not just looking for Irish,
Scottish or male firefighters, we are looking for any active,
retired or volunteer firefighter or their family members with a desire to represent
their department and want to be a part of something very
special and rewarding.
